Your Questions Answered

What is Divorce Mediation?

Divorce Mediation is not like a traditional divorce proceeding where lawyers for the parties communicate with one another, costing the couple thousands of dollars.  Instead, couples negotiate with one another on key aspects needing to be agreed upon, such as distribution of marital assets and debt, in a safe and calm setting with the guidance of the Divorce Mediator.

What Can You Expect?

During this process emotions may arise.  As your Divorce Mediator I will use my counseling skills to help deescalate any emotions that are interfering with coming to a reasonable agreement with one another.  Sessions can be either in person or online. When the Divorce Mediation Process is completed, you will have with you an agreement that you can present to the courts in order to finalize your divorce. The cost of the agreement that I write will be $450.  The cost of our sessions will be at a rate of $225 per hour.  For example, if there is a need for us to meet three times, the cost will be $675 plus the $450 for the written agreement for a total of $1,125.  The amount is based on the number of sessions necessary to arrive at an agreement.

How Long Will Divorce Mediation Take?

The number of sessions will depend upon each couple and how long it may take to agree on the issues at hand, such as the distribution of marital assets

and debt for example.

Is It Necessary To Hire An Attorney?

Hiring an attorney is not necessary; however, some couples do elect to have an attorney review the agreement prior to submitting it to the court.  It is advised that couples have individual attorneys if that is a direction that you decide to go.  It is not required to have an attorney during this process.

Why Should You Use Divorce Mediation?

Getting a divorce can not only be very stressful, but also very expensive.  Divorce Mediation is a much more cost effective approach and can contribute to a more amicable resolution.  This is particularly important when children are involved.

What Kind of Couple Could Benefit From Divorce Mediation?

Both parties must agree to the mediation process and be able to respectfully negotiate on a variety of issues that result in a fair and equitable agreement.
